Maturity and distance
There’s a version of maturity that looks a lot like giving up. Accepting you can’t control the outcome, and choosing to stay in the room anyway.
Say you’re watching someone you care about make choice after choice you can’t stand. Your instinct, understandably, is to pull back. It feels easier to cut contact and walk away, plenty of people do exactly that.
However, there may be wisdom in noticing how much resistance you have to the situation. And that by unconsciously indulging that resistance, you’ve distanced yourself from the possibility of getting what you want.
If someone you care about is making decisions that you think aren’t good for them, check-in on whether your distance gives them the best shot of them being their best.
If so, distance away. If not, it might be time to reconsider.
